The parish of Ajuda has been renovated after Portugal's crisis years and is thus more inhabited and even classified as Lisbon's "New Bairro Alto". Constant improvements in housing and public spaces, as well as in the services provided to the population, have led to this parish being classified, along with Belém, as the new premium area of the Portuguese capital.

In 1762, Ajuda became part of the municipality of Lisbon, thus ceasing to be a suburban town. The parish was then a cluster of houses, farms, quarries, lime kilns and mills. In 1768, the Marquis of Pombal set up the Botanical Garden in Horta da Quinta de Cima. It was also around this time, between 1766 and 1787, that Pina Manique had the Ajuda Cemetery built, where the servants of the Royal House were buried. The Real Barraca that had once been the royal family's residence was replaced by a huge palace - the Ajuda National Palace. Construction began in 1795, but had to be interrupted due to the French Invasions, which forced the royal family to flee to Brazil. It was finished in the mid-19th century and was the residence of King Carlos.

Like other parishes in Lisbon, Ajuda was also part of the municipality of Belém between 1852 and 1885 and was later reincorporated into Lisbon. Nowadays, Ajuda has been losing population due to the growing trend of people moving to the outskirts of the capital. The parish has a rich and varied heritage, the result of the many generations that have passed through it.
